National ADHD Awareness week

 18th – 24th September 2006

 ADHD IS REAL

ADDISS will be co-ordinating the first ever ADHD Awareness Week in the week of the 18th September.  This event together with a programme of activities will be  both centrally led and rolled out regionally via local support groups affiliated to ADDISS (ADDISS Affiliation Network).

In September this year children all over the country will be going back to school after the long summer break. Every teacher in every school in every classroom will have a child with ADHD diagnosed or undiagnosed. We need to ensure that everyone is aware of this condition and so together with a large number of groups and organisation we have declared the week of the 18th September National ADHD Awareness week. We shall be running a large media campaign entitled ADHD is Real.

Campaign Objectives

·         Directly address inaccuracies in media reporting and misunderstanding of the condition and its management

·         Generate more balanced media reporting of ADHD and its management in the national and regional press

·         Galvanise families living with the condition and the individuals working with children with ADHD to call for increased understanding and support for the lay and educational communities

o        Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists; Community Paediatricians; ADHD support groups; associated charities and support groups, for example, NSPCC; teachers and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs)

·         Increase awareness of the support available to families living with ADHD (ADDISS and local support groups; government departments; medical and educational provision)

Posters will be available to place in clinics, schools etc. Please contact us if you wish to receive materials
